Web shopping...so many benefits

I've always been a fan of shopping on the wonderful world wide web. As mothers Alison and I knew that providing our shop online and assistance via email would be extremely valuable to our customers as we knew how useful we have found it since we had children!

This Christmas I really threw myself into internet based shopping. Heading into my third trimester and experiencing all the normal aches and pains that come with pregnancy and a 2.5 year old in tow I wasn't so keen on finding the time to walk around the shops finding gifts. Like many I've appreciated the various store newsletters I have received with the Christmas Sales, and let me tell you I have jumped at the opportunity to buy many gifts as a result!

So what have I purchased? Many things including photo canvases and photo books, personalised kids lunch boxes and drink bottles, clothing and more. My latest purchase was this morning; for some weeks now I have been on the hunt for a backpack for my son. Keen to find something different to the mainstream Disney character bags I have searched all the usual sites and just couldn't find something that grabbed me. That was until a friend reminded me of Penny Scallan! I saw these bags a few months ago and was immediately attracted to them, so when I finally came across the website it just took me a couple of days to decide exactly what I was going to get and the order was placed.

These gorgeous bags are made from lined PVC and are just so cute! There are a number of lines available at Penny Scallan to interested you although I did find the boy prints a little restrictive - but this seems to be the case everywhere so I was not in the least surprised or put off! So I placed my order for a Lunchbox, Kindy bag and Wheelie travel bag in the Blue navy star design. So I am now excitedly awaiting another package in the mail :-) I think the postie might know me on a first name basis soon!

Another market has come and gone which has finished up our market run for 2009! It's been a couple of weeks now, the Handle With Care team finished this market and subsequently checked out for a few days, resting and just playing mums for a while!

The Handmade market was held on Friday 20th and Saturday 21st November and mother nature was certainly not kind to us! For the Friday twilight market we were left very uncomfortable with sticky 50% humidity and 35+ degree heat. Alison’s little 8 week old Emma tried so hard to just enjoy her night out with the girls but ultimately the heat made it very difficult for her, whilst we were left throwing down the bottles of water and fanning ourselves counting down until the end of the night! Saturday was slightly more comfortable, we came armed with a fan and the humidity was down again.
There is no doubt that the heat kept people away; the September market left us without a minute to spare the entire day but this time we were actually able to have the odd short break and spend a little bit of time with some of our customers. Despite the heat though we still had many many people come through those doors all seriously shopping for Christmas! Our beautiful Bobishi booties were a favourite once again, as were the Little Bean ice packs and Ivy Designs head scarves.

Here are some photos of our set up...unfortunately I was so flustered from the heat I just took a few of the same photos and then resumed my seat by the water bottle, so excuse the poor quality!

Once again I was not in the headspace to shop (well other than for food which once again satisfied me 110%) however Alison did purchase a beautiful lantern from Electric Firefly as well as some gorgeous felt handbags from Heart Felt Australia.

In true form my father checked out what the food vendors had to offer and came to show me some rather interesting looking wine from Disaster Bay Chilis, the wine of course is none other than Chilli Wine. Clearly the handmade market caters for EVERYBODY from young to old!

We are looking forward to the 2010 instalments of markets, we will keep you posted on which ones we decide to attend with March being the big ‘due date’ for myself we are just not sure at this point which markets we will attend and when!

Handmade Market this weekend

Can I preface this with reminding everyone that there are only 37 more sleeps until Santa visits! Needless to say we are excited that another market is on! Canberra's quarterly Upmarket brings together talented artists, designers, stylists, craftspeople and gourmets all at one destination. It is a unique event to connect the makers of beautiful things to people who appreciate the quality, handcrafted and locally designed.

Come along to the Twilight Market, this Friday 20th November from 5-9pm and enjoy a glass of wine, some dinner underneath the 'stars' and a shop around over 50 boutique stalls. Or come along on Saturday between 10am-4pm and enjoy the Eat@Handmade and many many many boutique stalls both indoors and out.

The organisers have really out done themselves this market, with industrial fans organised for within the shed and a free bus running from Civic interchange to the woolshed on the Saturday. Follow this link for more information about the bus service and the market including a vendors page.

I really encourage all Canberrans to venture out and check the market out, there really is something for everyone and it is definitely more of an event than just a market.

Addiction...

This week I am 23 weeks pregnant with my much awaited second beautiful baby. Unfortunately this pregnancy has come with the lovely symptom of reflux. I have been overjoyed to experience it since about week 7 of the pregnancy which left me very ill until I worked out what it was. It’s been managed well since then, but this week I’ve had to use the Zantac and Mylanta together which has left me looking at my diet and wondering if there was something (other than my increasingly active growing baby) that was causing it to worsen. I’m absolutely devastated to work out that it is chocolate. My beloved!

Now Wikipedia describes addiction as an obsession, compulsion, or excessive psychological dependence and in its most common usage these days for things like chocolate addiction it says the term addiction is used to describe a recurring compulsion by an individual to engage in some specific activity, despite harmful consequences, as deemed by the user themself to their individual health, mental state, or social life. I read this and it occurs to me, I do have an addiction, because despite this awful side effect of heartburn even when I use zantac…I still want to eat it.

Most devastating, is the fact that the Handmade Market is on this weekend. Alison and I have typically eaten our way through each market, conveniently we have had one of us pregnant at each market, and so eating our way through and supporting the food vendors at the markets has been easy.

I was gearing up this week to buy our ever favourite cupcakes from ‘Little Miss Cupcake’.

These Red Velvet and Cherry Ripe cupcakes are absolutely divine…(and chocolate!) and are just one of the huge range of absolutely delicious cupcakes that Little Miss Cupcake offers. At the first Handmade Market we attended Little Miss Cupcake sold out before midday...testament to everything I've said above and more.

And so, I have given this much thought and I have decided that the mylanta will be visiting the markets with us this weekend because I simply CANNOT resist the temptation of Little Miss Cupcake…and I highly suggest everyone try them. But I warn you, once you go there you quite possibly will never come back!

See you there

A day at the markets

Today Heather and I attended the Mathilda’s Markets in Canberra. What an exciting busy day we have had, so many people! – once again we ask ourselves ‘where did they all come from?’.

As much as we adore our little two year old boys, it’s always nice to leave the house to go and play with all things pretty at the markets. Today we had my little 6 week old Emma accompany us, and she was so well behaved! She certainly put on the perfect baby act, I don’t think people will believe me when I say I am sleep deprived…but really it was nice to have her with us particularly when we apparently bored her somewhat!
One thing contributing to Emma being the perfect baby was Heather’s mum- she cuddled her for most of the markets! Thanks Jan!!

As a stallholder it can be really hard to find the time and mindset to shop and spend at the markets, but this time I managed to do a little shopping and bought this gorgeous soft toy for Emma’s room from Sweet Sista’.

This cute giraffe caught my eye and I had to buy it as it reminded me of Emma’s Aunty Claire who is living over in the UK- her favourite animal is the giraffe and I have no doubt she would love this one too! The girls at Sweet Sista sell all sorts of lovely wares including other really cute animals made from gorgeous fabrics similar to this giraffe. You can see more of their products on their website http://www.sweetsista.com.au/

Once again, a big hit for us were the myMonkeymoo Pram Liners and Blankets, not surprising given these truly are something special. We have blogged about them before and the opportunities just keep arising, these babies sell themselves!
So we packed up (which is the worst part of going to the markets- a bit like unpacking after a holiday) only to be repacking this week for the Canberra Handmade Market which is just around the corner this coming weekend! EEEK!
We had a good response to our nappies also which is great, each market we go to we get the word out more about the benefits of using cloth nappies, so hopefully we've converted some people.

The talented West...

Handle With Care is proud to stock a number of product lines from Western Australia. Brusselsprouts, Woddlebots and Green Kids are big sellers at HWC.
Well, Alison and I have been on Etsy and Madeit...again and we have found even more talent that is now on its way from WA and I had to share them with you!

First up are Jingle Sox! It's that time of year again and the moment we saw these we wanted them...needed them in our store! Jingle Sox are the creation of Jenny; wife, mum of four beautiful children and grandmother with an obvious love of fabric, designing and sewing!
Deekie Belle Designs creates fun and funky Jingle Sox made from many fabulous high quality fabrics and quilts. We are so excited to have a parcel on their way to us which we will have at the upcoming Mathilda's and Handmade Markets - unless they sell out before!
Have a look at these gorgeous creations! don't you just love them as much as we do?!!

Our next show off creation Little Bean is designed and made by Emma Little, a mum of 3 girls under the age of 4!
Being mums of 2 year old boys, we are all too familiar with the need for ice packs.
These creations spell cute, fun and highly functional all at once!
These gorgeous children's cold packs by Little Bean have many more uses than for just those little (and not so little) falls! with summer fast approaching we are keen to use them to help keep our children's lunches cold, keep ourselves cool, use on our own aches and pains thanks to lugging toddlers around... the list goes on.
Emma's creation of a smaller ice pack to use on her pulled muscle after having a caesarean section quickly became a cold pack specifically for children. With some gorgeous fabrics to choose from and a high quality finish these cold packs are sure to be a hit (and easily beat any pack of frozen peas!)
We cannot wait to show them to our customers at the upcoming markets!

See you at the markets!

What we love...

Living in Canberra, we were fortunate enough to have a public holiday yesterday for Melbourne Cup Day. In a bid to avoid more housework that never seems to end anyway, I decided to finish unpacking our latest beautiful Ivy Designs order and hang them ready for our upcoming markets.

It is always good fun unpacking our latest orders and this one was no exception.
As Summer approaches we enjoy dressing our little boys in light and fresh clothing, and it is just as fun helping other people have the opportunity to dress their little ones in beautiful unique clothing too.
The amazingly talented Wynona and Anna of Ivy Designs design and handcraft all their gorgeous wares. The have once again created a beautiful range of girls clothing for summer.

This season features a lovely range of clothing and accessories that meet the light and fresh requirements of Spring and Summer!
The theme for this season is Tea Parties! and as you can see from the the photographs featured, the range certainly does bring back memories of tea time in the garden and picnics in the countryside.
The modern vintage collection brings together florals, ginghams and polka dots which are not only pleasing to the eye but look absolutely delightful on any little girl.

Ivy Designs clothing is so beautiful and is always made with close attention to detail and are superior quality- we can't wait to showcase Ivy Designs in the Canberra market.

Ivy Designs range is now available in store, online or you can visit us at the Canberra Mathilda’s market on Sunday 15th November, and the Canberra Handmade Market on Friday 21st and Saturday 22nd November.

As promised some updated information on Alison's new arrival!

Emma Elizabeth arrived at 3.45am on 27th September 2009, at nearly 3.9kg with a lovely head of hair Emma is just stunning. She decided on a dramatic entrance with an intense and quick labour (well after weeks of start/stop) on a cold rainy Canberra night arriving a mere 10 mins after getting to hospital!!! Both Mum and bub are doing well and recovering in the comfort of home.

The photo below is of Emma at about 7 hours young - welcome to the world baby Emma!

'Little Brown Mouse' is the newest addition to Handle with Care and what an amazing range it is!

Little Brown Mouse comprises of a daughter and mother team, and together they create these gorgeous clothes, bed linen and accessories in an extensive range of beautiful, vintage and whimsical fabrics.

I was so excited to stumble across the range from Little Brown Mouse and even more excited to become one of their retailers.

Unfortunately however we only ordered a limited amount, and once I received them and wanted more I found out that it is too late- they are no longer making these!! However I do know they will be bringing out a new range that will be just as amazing.

Have a look at this Scarlett Pom Pom Dress, just too cute for words!

Below is a picture of the 'Dainty Dress and Bloomer Set' which is my absolute favourite, do you think they look lovely in this picture? you should see them in real life!

We will be taking this range to the Canberra Handmade Market however at the rate we're going there won't be many to buy as we've already sold some in store. (Don't like my chances of keeping one for myself!)

I am sure all the mothers of boys are thinking 'there's just no cute clothes for boys out there' I understand, as I have a 2 1/2 year old boy myself I understand how frustrating it is to see racks of girls clothing and not much for those gorgeous boys in our lives. Well, have a look at this lovely outfit- just the cutest outfit for your little man!

Little Brown Mouse will be available online as soon as we get them up! however in the mean time if there is anything you are interested in or would like to see images of the other designs we have please email us and we will happily provide these for you. Alternatively if you are in the Canberra region, come along to the Canberra Handmade Markets on 12th September at the Yarralumla Woolshed- we will have a stall there will with their lovely range!

Little Miss Stitch

We are very excited to receive our latest Handcrafted Creation here are Handle with Care!
Sandra from 'Little Miss Stitch' has created these lovely tunics from printed cottons, denims and corduroys contrasting with gorgeous designer fabrics.

The dresses were beautifully packaged and sealed with a 'Little Miss Stitch' sticker and we could see the vibrant colours of the retro style dresses the minute we opened the parcel. As we delved further into our parcel the gorgeous buttons jumped out at us, they were all unique for the different tunics and nicely complimented each piece.

As there are only very small runs of each of the items available at Little Miss Stitch, you can be assured that you are purchasing something that is different and unique.

To see more of the 'Little Miss Stitch' range go to the 'Handcrafted Creations' section of our website: http://handle-with-care.com.au/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=78

Enjoy!

Swaddling the little one

This week with Alison's nappy stash finally sorted for her new arrival it was time to turn to swaddling wraps. Whilst we both have plenty of wraps from our first little boys there is something nice about using fresh new swaddling wraps for a new baby. Plus it seems our old wraps are all pilled, and a lot smaller than we remembered! have we forgotten how small babies are when they arrive?!?!
So we found ourselves in a pile of our beautiful Aden + Anais wraps comparing their size to our older wraps. I think we found a winner, Alison is keen to have a selection of these wraps for her little September baby.

Aden + Anais was formed by Australian mothers who moved to the United States and found the swaddling cloths made of the muslin fabric they wanted were too small for their babies, Aden and Anais.

Further, every swaddling blanket that was large enough was made with fabric other than the muslin cloth that is so readily available for swaddling a baby in Australia. So they began making their own, adding baby hooded towel designs and baby washcloths to their soft muslin creations.

Each of the wraps by Aden + Anais are 47 inches by 47 inches (120cm x 120cm), which makes them a perfect size for keeping any little Houdini gently wrapped. What we love about these wraps is that they come in such a large variety of colours and pack sizes which makes them not only useful, but affordable. It seems there is a colour for everyone, with anything from navy camo to soft pink stripes or solid white.

To view our range of Aden + Anais swaddling wraps please visit our store http://www.handle-with-care.com.au/ in the 'Swaddling your Baby' section.

Yes it was well and truly over due, and is now finally here!

We were never entirely happy with our previous site, but it was better then no website at all and it served us well for over a year! We are so excited to see our new website live. myMonkeymoo

The first pram I owned had a lovely plush interior, my son was always so cozy. I bought a new pram though as my old one just wasn’t right as far as functionality- but it wasn’t the same comfort wise! The interior was a bit plastic like and wasn’t so appealing to the eye.
So I started my search for a pram liner. I started by folding a blanket over and lining the pram, however I couldn’t slot the straps through.
I searched and searched, and finally! I stumbled across the myMonkeymoo pram pads and matching blankets.

I often email Heather with photos attached with the subject line as ‘we must get!’ This was one of those moments.
The myMonkeymoo range is so divine, it is hard to pick which pattern you want to co ordinate with your pram or stroller, there would be more than one you want for sure!
Here are some of my favourite prints!

Not only does it fit most strollers and prams, but it also fits some bassinettes perfectly! (thankfully mine is one of those!)

To complete the picture, each pram liner has a matching blanket which is just as luxurious- and when you don’t need to use it in the warmer months, you can use it as a tummy time rug.
These gorgeous pram liners are compatible with most 5 point harness systems, they are reversible (the chenille side is oh so soft!) and machine washable (VERY important when dealing with littlies!)
With the hip urban style fabrics on one side and soft and cosy chenille on the other, these liners and blankets are a must for any Pram! Especially if you have a hard time resisting style!
Are you excited yet? Well now is the time to tell you there is more!
myMonkeymoo are about to release the new ‘Solido’ range which is as the name suggests- lovely solid colours, if you are after something a little more subtle.

myMonkeymoo are also releasing the ‘Metro’ range which has a unique quilted look (images soon to be released).

Handle with Care is excited to be Australia’s only retailer of the myMonkeymoo range. Visit our website and go to the ‘Out and About’ section to see the range, alternatively you can go to http://www.mymonkeymoo.com/ for full product information!
We are due to have a shipment arrive in July, so if there is a liner & blanket that takes your fancy let us know now- if we don’t have it on our website we can include your order, so email us now so you don’t miss out!

Please email us with any questions you might have regarding these exciting pram liners and blankets.

Kids in the Shed

On 21st June we will be holding a stall at The Old Bus Depot Markets, the theme of the day being - ‘Kids in the Shed’.

This market has a focus on the little people in our lives. Come by the Kingston Markets and pick up something special for every occasion.

Not only is this a nice thing to do on a Sunday for parents, but it is also enjoyable for the kiddies- Milo the Clown will be there to help entertain them!
We love going to the markets as it gives us an opportunity to show off our beautiful range of hand crafted children’s clothing made by designers such as Ivy Designs, Brusselsprouts, Tikiboo Kids and Evie Lala.
These gorgeous clothing lines are unique and beautifully made by extremely talented people, your little one is sure to stand out in the crowd.

We will also have our Modern Cloth nappies with us and will provide assistance on the use, care and other general information to help people who are converting to cloth or building on their stash.

Attending markets also allows us to meet more of our customers face to face, so please come and say hello and introduce yourself if you happen to make it to the market!

Sleep well and bye for now

Canberra Handmade Market...

Well Alison and I have nearly recovered from our big day at the markets on Saturday! The Handmade Market brings together talented artists, designers, stylists, craftspeople and gourmets all at one destination. It is a unique event to connect the makers of beautiful things to people who appreciate the quality, handcrafted and locally designed. The time put in to organising the Handmade Market, not just by each individual stallholder but also the Handmade Market organisers truly shows on the day.

The hall was crowded and certainly exceeded expectations, perhaps a sign that people are keen to spend their money on those unique and high quality items! One particular thing I was impressed with on the day was the choice of music (not that you could hear it that well once the crowd arrived!) Michael Buble and I have had a love affair for many years now so he was the icing on the cake, it made setting up even more enjoyable!

Rack of clothing, Brusselsprouts, Ivy Designs and Tikiboo

Evie lala Reversible baby shoes

Bobishi Newborn baby booties

Wild Things of Noosa Ellie and Ivy Designs Top
Brusselsprouts Cardigan with Buttons

We were so busy we didn’t get much time to search the other stall holders items (probably a good thing for our wallets), I think this was the case for all the stall holders – the crowds astounded us all! We did however get a taste of a delicious White Chocolate and Raspberry cupcake by Little Miss Cupcake before they sold out, we also had enough time to eye of some of Col Ellis’ photographs- his photographs are truly amazing and we wish we had more money to satisfy our children’s clothing obsession and to make our homes look beautiful!

We were familiar with some of the other Stalls items as they have been fellow stallholders at other markets we have attended and whilst we didn’t get to chat to them it was nice to see familiar faces around, it was equally nice to see some other products that we were not familiar with! I really want to know how do all these talented people actually exist? How can there be so many unique items in the one place?! Certainly something to be seen to be believed.

It was lovely to see some of our previous customers come by with their gorgeous little babies and swelling bumps – we really enjoy being a part of our customer’s lives and sorry we couldn’t catch up more during the market! We had some wonderful feedback on our products; it was really nice to see them all so beautifully set up on the racks.

We also discovered that some customers who have seen us at previous markets have had problems contacting us. Once again we apologise for our unreliable email system, this is something I am getting on to first thing tomorrow morning!!! If we do not reply to your emails within 12 hours please chase us up! One of us is online almost all the time!

Well that is it from me tonight, still feeling very weary from a day on my feet and keen to hit the pillow!

New Products at Handle With Care!!!!!

I'm too excited not to update with some pictures of our new stock!

This week Handle With Care became the first retailer of Woddlebots All In One nappies.

Krystie Bremer is the founder/owner/creator of Woddlebots nappies. Since 2005 Krys has been admiring, purchasing and making her own Modern Cloth Nappies. In late 2006 Woddlebots became available to customers via an online forum, and in 2007 that customer based extended with the opening of her online store. I'm fortunate enough to have met Krys via this online forum in 2005 and so used a number of Woddlebots on my son. I loved the trimness of the nappies and ofcourse the cute factor of them. As Handle With Care is loving our Australian made and handcrafted products we were very excited to get onboard with Woddlebots this week. Although our fluffy mail is yet to arrive I have added the products onto our website so our customers can view and order them. Woddlebots will offer a slightly different AIO option in comparison to our other handcrafted AIO, Bubblebubs and our other brands Baby BeeHinds MagicAll and Bumgenius. http://www.handle-with-care.com.au/store/WsDefault.asp?Cat=CuteStylishBottoms&Sub=32&isThumbs=Yes&curpage=2&Thumbs=100

Yesterday I also received a very exciting package from Brusselsprouts. Handle With Care has slowly been extending our clothing range over the last few months with ordering more of the brands we already stock and finding other new and gorgeous ranges to stock. We cautiously ordered some Brusselsprouts clothing and awaited our package, I have to say when I opened the products yesterday I let out an audible gasp. They are just absolutely beautiful. Not only do they compliment our other ranges, Evie la la, Ivy Designs and Tikiboo but they offer something just slightly different to what these other brands do. The classic fabrics and beautifully crocheted and knitted garments are a pleasure to not only the eyes but also your hands.

As with all our brands I cannot wait to do another order and Alison and I have already been selecting some other items that we would love to stock up on. Hopefully in the not too distant future. These items are also up on the website, http://www.handle-with-care.com.au/store/WsDefault.asp?Cat=DressingYourBaby

Well that is it from me, I hope everyone has a lovely weekend. Our store will be open tomorrow, Sunday 17th May from 9am until 12 midday and I'm looking forward to seeing a number of customer I know are coming by.

Conception

The conception of Handle With Care was in January 2008. Like most evenings Alison and I (Heather) were emailing each other discussing the usual issues associated with our little ones. Reflux was the flavour of our life. Having met in Mothers group in 2007 we found we clicked
straight away – not only did we have boys with reflux but we also had a passion for cute cloth nappies (of course amongst the other things that we have in common). Our friendship forged and we often chatted about many of life’s joys and challenges via email, over the phone and in person.

It was one evening in January that Alison emailed me with THE IDEA - to start a business providing a range of Modern Cloth Nappies (MCN) along with advice on their use. I was immediately on board with this venture having always had the desire to work from home but never quite finding something that grabbed me enough to put the effort in. But this did it.

We excitedly discussed the services we could provide our customers that we had always wanted ourselves having both found it extremely hard to understand MCN from our internet research. We spent most evenings searching brands, discussing the pros and cons and sampling as many nappies as possible.

And so Handle With Care was conceived!

In February 2008, we came up with our name. We had many options but Handle With Care nappy and baby boutique was the one we settled on – it felt right. I might note that many of the ideas come from email conversations we have had very late at night, I think these ideas come to us thanks to being up all night with our refluxing babies (at least something positive came from the hours of screaming and settling). Even to this day I still get emails from Alison at some very odd hours with some wonderful ideas including new products she has found!

Soon after we started to build up our stash of nappies we discovered that we needed to extend our product line. Nappies are fun, but there are so many other cute and stylish yet functional baby and children’s products that are just so hard to find, particularly in Canberra. So
this is when our little baby started to grow its arms and legs. We started to find a great list of products we wanted to stock…unfortunately we have had to keep a lid on most of these as we have had to ensure we can manage this business whilst keeping our families as our priority.

I’m not sure when Handle With Care was actually born, I suppose it was a culmination of all the thoughts, ideas and plans from that first day in January. Somehow we have managed to get to over 1 year old! We cannot believe how far Handle With Care has come in that time. Like most parents we never imagined at its conception what it might become when it ‘grew up’. We have nurtured it with many many hours of love of attention. We have had many dinners to discuss how it is travelling, what we can do to nurture it further and how we will ensure it continues growing with minimal growing pains.

We are passionate about what we are doing and absolutely love what Handle With Care offers us both and our customers. We have met so many wonderful customers who have come into our lives through Handle With Care and each one has touched our lives in one way or another. These customers have allowed us to not only sell them products but to become a part of their lives. We have seen many bellies grow and flourish into beautiful babies and have been so blessed to share this with people who we might otherwise never have known. Its without a doubt the customers we get to meet and know that makes the many hours we put into Handle With Care all worth it.

So thank you to our customers, without you we would not have made it through our first year (which they say is the hardest) and we would not be here growing in our second year without you.

We hope you enjoy reading our blog, and that we can have more to do with our customers through sharing some more about ourselves and our growing business on here!
